The strategy of placing tolls, managed by the Roads Fund (FE, FP), along national roads Nº1, Nº6 and Nº204, has resulted, since it began operating, in the mobilization of financial resources for road maintenance, in the order of one billion meticais.
The information was made known on Friday, July 21, in Maputo, during the Annual Joint Evaluation Meeting of the Integrated Road Sector Program - PRISE 2022.
Speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources (MOPHRH), Hélio Jeremias Banze, said that for the current five-year period, 2020-2024, the Mozambican government had committed itself to carrying out actions that would guarantee the improvement of mobility conditions for people and goods, through the rehabilitation of the main rural road corridors.
"In order to achieve this goal, from 2022 to the present day, 1,256 kilometers have been rehabilitated, 575 kilometers of national and regional roads have been asphalted and routine maintenance work has been carried out on 13,000 kilometers of roads," said Hélio Jeremias Banze.
On the same occasion, the PCA pointed out that the tolls under the supervision of the FE, which cover a distance of around 2,000 kilometers, generate a budget for the institution that enables it to contribute to road maintenance.
"The aim of this initiative is to increase resources for road maintenance. The results, in terms of services, are consolidated over time. I would like to highlight the Chissebuca/Lindela stretch, in Inhambane province, where a significant part of the resources mobilized through toll revenues have been used," explained Ângelo Macuácua.
It should be noted that, through this program, around 310 million dollars were approved for the roads sector at the end of June, for the construction and rehabilitation of around 606 kilometers of roads in Zambézia province, including the construction of the alternative bridge over the Licungo river in Mocuba, the construction of accesses to the bridge, over a length of 18 kilometers, as well as the periodic maintenance of National Road No. 1, in the most critical sections.
