Riots in the in the administrative post of Chaláua, in the district of Moma, Nampula province, resulted in the vandalization of public and private property. A police post was set on fire, an AKM-47 weapon was seized, motorcycles and a Mahindra vehicle were set on fire, and the Frelimo party headquarters was vandalized. The houses of the commander and the head of the administrative post were set on fire.
The police even reinforced their contingent of officers to contain the riots, but were unable to confront the angry population.
According to the police, their agents were protecting a "victory" march by the Frelimo party, but a group of Podemos party supporters came to the town to make the march impossible.
The police in Nampula have said that the situation in that part of the country is under control, and that they are investigating whether the vehicle that was set on fire and the AKM-47 weapon belong to the police.
The Frelimo party saw its district headquarters in KaMavota, Maputo City, set on fire by unknown assailants last night. It is suspected that it was burned down by Podemos demonstrators.
