Police extortionist arrested by PRM

A member of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Nampula, with the rank of inspector, has been detained since Friday on charges of extortion of his colleagues to the value of five thousand meticais.

According to the Provincial Office of Anti-Corruption in this part of the country, the incident occurred when five members of the corporation intended to travel on a mission to the district of Muecate for the protection of the sites of payment of subsidies to socially vulnerable groups by the National Institute for Social Action (INAS).

The agents in question received a travel allowance of four thousand meticais each from INAS. Meanwhile, the arrested inspector forced each of his colleagues to hand over one thousand meticais of the amount received, allegedly by order of their superior.

For the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the attitude of that PRM inspector constitutes passive corruption and is an illegal act of abuse of office or function.

The source said that the police officer's arrest was aimed at preventing him from escaping and disturbing the criminal proceedings aimed at holding him accountable. (News)
