A citizen was fatally shot by a police officer from the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) who mistook him for a robber in the early hours of Sunday morning in the district of GuruéZambézia province.
According to Radio MozambiqueThe incident occurred when the victim, a teacher, was returning to his home, which was being robbed. One shot hit him in one leg and the other in the abdomen.
The spokesman for the provincial command in Zambézia, Sidner Lonzo, said that an investigation was underway to determine the degree of culpability of the police officer who made the "procedural error".
"There were people in a certain house with the intention of looting it. The owner of the house, who unfortunately lost his life in the pursuit, was shot dead. At the moment, the police are providing all possible assistance to the family for the funeral," he said.
This is the second case of a PRM "procedural error" that has led to the death of a house owner in an attempt to capture thieves in Zambézia.
"We are still carrying out the investigation. It's a situation that still needs to be clarified down to the smallest detail. That's why the responsibility for this action will be duly ascertained," he said.
