Dubai police announced today that they have arrested two suspects in a corruption case in South Africa that also involves former South African head of state Jacob Zuma.
In a statement quoted by Notícias ao Munuto, Dubai police said they have detained brothers Atul and Rajesh Gupta, "following criminal charges filed in South Africa for money laundering."
This is the latest extradition case involving the UAE authorities.
South African authorities suspected that the two accused, as well as their brother Ajay, had been hiding in Dubai since they fled South Africa around the same time Jacob Zuma resigned in 2018 over allegations he was involved in corruption related to state-owned enterprises.
Dubai police said they arrested the brothers after receiving a "red notice" warrant from Interpol.
"The arrest reflects the UAE's ongoing efforts to combat money laundering crimes through local cooperation among the relevant authorities," noted the police, who are so far unaware of Ajay Gupta's whereabouts.
On Monday, South African authorities said that the two brothers had been arrested, following talks between South African and Dubai entities.
However, Emirati authorities only announced the arrest today.
The Gupta's are accused of using their connection to Jacob Zuma to profit from huge government contracts and bribes, and were even believed to be so influential that they had a hand in appointing ministers in the former South African President's Cabinet.
The US Treasury Department has placed the three Gupta brothers on a 2019 sanctions list, accusing them of being "members of a significant corruption network." This measure prohibits US entities from doing business with the brothers or dealing with their assets.
Jacob Zuma was President of South Africa from 2009 until he was forced to resign by his party during a major corruption scandal in the country.
