The Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) fired tear gas bullets to disperse the supporters of the former presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane.
The grassroots group is waiting for Mondlane to leave a hearing being held at the Attorney General's Office (PGR), where he is making statements about a criminal case concerning incitement to disobedience and public disorder in the post-election period.
Earlier, Mondlane's supporters had even managed to gather in front of the PGR building, but minutes before Mondlane's arrival, the canine police drove the group behind the roadblocks that give access to the institution, on Avenida Vladimir Lénine.
Up to this point, the police had not used force to disperse the supporters, but continued to extend the perimeter blockade.
No injuries have yet been reported as a result of the police action, which dispersed the supporters who had already stopped vehicles at the intersection of Avenida Vladimir Lénine and Zedequias Manganhelas, in downtown Maputo. The group is now gathered on Avenida 25 de Setembro.
Mondlane's departure has been awaited for more than an hour, not least because it was the PGR's advisors who said that Mondlane's departure would be swift. (Photo merely illustrative)
