Traffic Police will only perform alcohol tests on "confused" drivers

Polícia de Trânsito só vai realizar teste de álcool a condutores “confusos”

The tests to detect the level of alcohol in the blood of motorists will only be applied to those who offer resistance to avoid taking them, according to the Traffic Police.

"We are picking up, but in a timid way, because of covid-19, but we follow all the protocols for the prevention of the disease," said today the spokesman of the Traffic Police, Ricardo Tchambana, quoted by the STV television channel.

The alcohol tests resumed last weekend, about 15 days after the approval for their resumption. And, for now, the authorities say that drivers who make it impossible to take the test on public roads will be subjected to blood tests in a health unit, "and all the costs of this process will fall on the driver".

Police are urging drivers and pedestrians to avoid consuming alcoholic beverages when hitting the streets.

In Maputo City alone, according to data from the Traffic Police, from January to June 2022, 134 accidents were registered, compared to 115 in the same period last year, and 76 were due to pedestrian accidents, compared to 53 in 2021.
