Cheringoma Plateau transformed into community conservation area

Planalto de Cheringoma transformado em área de conservação comunitária

The Cheringoma plateau, in Sofala province, has just been designated a community conservation area, as a way of preserving biodiversity.

This is a 36,000 hectare area that forms part of a planned conservation corridor linking Gorongosa National Park and the Marromeu Reserve.

According to Domingo, a team of scientists recently carried out an expedition in remote areas of Cheringoma and found great potential in terms of natural resources.

According to the government, the creation of the Cheringoma Community Conservation Area is aimed at empowering local communities and giving them back the power to manage natural resources, boosting agriculture, sustainable fishing, hunting, tourism, sustainable extraction of non-timber forest products and other activities, as long as they are sustainable and provided for in the Management Plan.
