Mozambican researcher Beni Chaúque, has just presented a technique for water disinfection using the solar system. This is an innovation that he says could help millions of people, especially in developing countries where water is still scarce because it is cheap in terms of cost.
Studying in Brazil, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), the technique developed by Mozambican Chaúque consists of treating water with sunlight in a continuous flow. According to the Brazilian newspaper "G1", the most usual method cleans 1 liter of water every six hours, using transparent PET bottles placed under the sun. In the structure created by the Mozambican, with mirrors, the time falls to one and a half minutes, that is, 240 times faster.
"It is a set of mirrors, in a proper optical configuration based on angles and concavities, and a system of heat collectors and ultraviolet and infrared radiation," explains the researcher quoted by G1.
According to the experts, the equipment does not require electricity or chemical elements to clean the water. The technique has proven efficient in deactivating protozoa and bacteria.
