Fishing exports 4000 tons in the first semester

According to the Ministry of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries of Mozambique, fishing operators exported about 4000 tons of fish products in the first six months of this year. The amount corresponds to 34% of the sector's annual plan and a growth of 11% when compared with the same period last year.

The information was given by Augusta Maita, Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, during an evaluation of the results of the fishing campaign over the first six months.

"We want a quantitative and qualitative leap in our exports, but success depends on winning new markets and meeting the requirements and certifications imposed to put the country on the global trade route," said Maita, quoted by Carta.

During the first half of 2021, the country's fishery reached an overall production of about 230,000 tons, totaling 48% of planned annual production. It also had a growth of 4% compared to the same period in 2020.

He pointed out that the country's fishing sector imposes a closed season on surface shrimp and mangrove crab fishing each year in an attempt to ensure its sustainability.

According to the minister, despite the progress achieved so far, reports about the constant killing of protected species in marine and inland waters represent a major concern for the fishing authorities.
