Pekiwa presents "Daughters of the Sea" exhibition at Camões

Pekiwa apresenta no Camões exposição “Filhas do Mar”

On June 22, at 6pm, the Camões - Portuguese Cultural Center in Maputo will open a solo exhibition by Mozambican artist Pekiwa, entitled "Filhas do Mar" (Daughters of the Sea), with a presentation of new works created by the artist over the last two years.

Pekiwa develops his sculptural designs using wood materials that he collects and buys on the island of Mozambique, as well as iron that he finds in urban scrap yards in Maputo province.

From animal and human figures to geometric compositions, Pekiwa sculpts on wood and incorporates iron in order to present his concerns about everyday life and the society in which he lives.

"Daughters of the Sea", in particular, shows the natural erosion inherent in materials that coexist with the sea, but also concerns that the artist has felt throughout his career and which he proposes to raise awareness, through some provocation, about preservation and the necessary diversity.

The development of Pekiwa's work seeks to reflect on current issues and a strong connection to the nature of the sea, inherent in his thinking, the context of his work and the search for raw materials mostly on an island, naturally closely related to the sea and all that it provides.

In different lineages, Pekiwa also often gives a new function to abandoned architectural objects such as doors, shutters and windows, which through a new look become objects of enjoyment and allow moments of reflection.

The exhibition "Filhas do Mar" has the support of Millennium Bim and will be on display at the Camões Portuguese Cultural Center in Maputo until August 31st, from Monday to Saturday, between 10h00 and 17h00.
