The pedestrian crossing over the Revúbuè River, located between the cities of Tete and Moatize, in Tete province, will be closed today, Wednesday, and later destroyed, due to the arrival of the rainy season.
This is a solution that had been found by the Vulcan mining company, in June, in partnership with the Government, as a way to respond to the effects of the partial destruction of the bridge, during the passage of the tropical depression Ana, in January, to allow the crossing of its workers, as well as the citizens of the two cities, while the works for the assembly of the metallic bridge over the Revúbuè river are underway.
The delegate of the National Road Administration (ANE) in Tete, Victor Maicolo, explained that it is necessary to destroy the link, because it constitutes a barrier for the normal flow of the river, and at the moment there is an accumulation of water upstream.
"In situation of the need for runoff above what we have now, with the coming of the rains, it will force the power level to increase and when it reaches the peak it will lead to a situation of uncontrolled flow downstream of the connection," he clarified.
As for the status of the placement of the metal bridge, he said that the works are progressing in the best way and that next November 24 could be completed, as stated in the contract.
He added, however, that there are pillars on the Moatize side that suffered structural damage and need reinforcement, which was not foreseen in the initial contract, so an addendum is being prepared. And there will be a study about the possibility of pedestrians crossing the metallic bridge after November 24th, while the activities to reinforce the foundations are underway.
Until then, the connection between most of the northern districts of Tete province and the provincial capital will be ensured by the Kassuende bridge, which increases the cost of transport, especially for people who frequent the cities of Tete and Moatize on a daily basis. The people will need at least 50 meticais to get to the center of the city of Tete, for example, or 70 meticais if they want to go to the neighborhoods Matundo or Chingodzi, when before the journey cost 40 meticais and was done in a short time.
