To ease congestion, Maputo Port will have interchange for trucks

The Port of Maputo will create an interchange for trucks in Maputo Province. The measure comes as a way of easing congestion on National Road Number Four, especially at peak times.

The site will cover between 10 and 15 hectares and will be located in the Moamba district. Work on the facility is to be paid for by the Port of Maputo concessionaire, and is expected to take three months.

The information was revealed by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, yesterday during a meeting he held with the governor of Maputo province, Júlio Parruque.

According to the minister, an average of 1,200 trucks pass through the EN4 every day from South Africa, mainly carrying coal and ferrochrome.

For his part, the governor of Maputo Province, Júlio Parruque, said that this is great news for the people of the province he heads, as there is a lot of inconvenience due to congestion on the road, caused by lorries taking the EN4.

The government is also going to ban truck traffic during rush hour. In this regard, the Minister of Transport and Communications said that the idea is to ban the movement of lorries from six to eight o'clock in the morning and from four to six o'clock in the evening.

In the long term, the government wants the cargo transported by trucks to be transferred to trains, a job that must be done by Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique and the concessionaire of the Port of Maputo.
