Western countries are "hypocrites" - this is how Amnesty International draws attention to the unequal responses to humanitarian crises. In its annual report, the organization highlights, for example, the different treatment of refugees from the war in Ukraine.
Philip Luther, a member of Amnesty, points out that "those fleeing war and repression in Syria and Afghanistan have not had the same treatment. The United States, which is so critical of Russian aggression, has also taken in tens of thousands of Ukrainians. But they subject Haitian asylum seekers to arbitrary detention and humiliating treatment that amounts to torture based on race."
One weight, two measures, sums up Amnesty International, which contrasts the concerted actions against Russia with the general passivity regarding human rights violations in other countries.
"European states and others have double standards. On the one hand, they condemn Russia, on the other they are complicit with their allies in serious violations taking place in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, among others. Last year, Russia used its veto power to paralyze the UN Security Council, which cannot continue to happen. We need to give more voice to countries that are usually ignored, especially in the southern hemisphere."
The increase in police violence is another of the factors highlighted in the report, in countries such as Portugal, for example, where the worsening housing crisis and the exploitation of migrants were also highlighted.
