Country receives batches of cholera vaccine

País recebe lotes de vacina contra a cólera

Mozambique will soon receive batches of the cholera vaccine, whose immunization campaign is scheduled for next month, before the start of the 2024/2025 rainy season, health authorities said.

The health sector will prioritize the localities of Xinavane and Ressano Garcia, in Maputo province; Nhamatanda in Sofala, and the city of Nampula, which continue to register outbreaks of the disease, according to "Notícias".

Speaking to the newspaper, the head of the Department of Health and Surveillance at the Ministry of Health (MISAU), Domingos Guihole, said that previously, the focus was on immunizing the communities of Cabo Delgado and Zambézia, but with the emergency situation in the places with outbreaks, there was a need to request more immunizers from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Guihole explained that if people are vaccinated with one dose, they can have six months of immunity, and if they are vaccinated with two, the protection can last up to two years.

In the meantime, while waiting for the vaccines, the sector remains vigilant in the communities for the control of the disease, through contact tracing of the last patients seen and testing of suspected cases. (Source: News)
