The demobilization of more than 400 former RENAMO combatants at the Mapangapanga base in Vunduzi, in the Gorongosa district, which incidentally was Renamo's central base, was due to begin on Monday, December 19, but it didn't happen because neither the former combatants nor RENAMO leader Ossufo Momade were present.
So far no one has appeared in public to explain the reasons for the boycott and the representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Micro Manzone, who had announced the dismantling of RENAMO's last base, has been "on the run", saying only that the President of the Republic and the leader of RENAMO were talking about it.
No new date has yet been set for the completion of the DDR, which is officially scheduled to end this year.
RENAMO's ex-combatants have been dissatisfied with the process since none of the demobilized members are receiving their pensions and there is no movement in this direction. Peace Room
