Former South African paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius, who shot his girlfriend four times in 2013, was denied his request for parole on Friday.
Oscar Pistorius, the former South African Paralympic champion who shot his girlfriend four times in 2013, will remain in prison. The former athlete's request for parole was denied on Friday. "We have been... advised at this time that parole has been denied and will be considered again in a year's time," the victim's family lawyer told AFP.
South African law allows a convict to benefit from a sentence adjustment once half of his sentence has been served. This translates into a possible conditional release.
Pistorius, 36 and an amputee with both legs, was sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison in November 2017. This means that he has been eligible for parole since July 2021.
"I don't believe Oscar is remorseful... or rehabilitated"
The issue was discussed by a committee on March 30. The topics under analysis were behavior during the period of detention, physical and mental state and the risk of reoffending. The process began over a year ago and included a meeting with the victim's parents, who were shocked at the prospect of the killer's release.
It was on the night of February 13-14, 2013 that Pistorius shot his girlfriend, 29-year-old Reeva Steenkamp, four times. The shots were fired through the bathroom door. And the athlete justified the act with the idea that he was a thief.
The former South African paralympic champion has admitted that he is sorry for killing his girlfriend, but still maintains that he killed her by mistake. "I don't believe it. I don't believe Oscar is remorseful... or rehabilitated," said the victim's mother yesterday, Friday morning.
Oscar Pistorius went down in history as the first Paralympic athlete to compete against non-disabled athletes. This happened in the 400-meter race at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
