Opposition parties in Mozambique have reacted with discontent to the President of the Republic's allegation that some people have distanced themselves from politicians in order to facilitate terrorist recruitment. They suggest that members of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo) party should be investigated for recruiting terrorists.
"We are following some people who pretend to be politicians, but then recruit future terrorists," said Filipe Nyusi recently in the city of Nampula, claiming to have received complaints from defectors. "There are reports of those who run away and say your names, and I know that you are listening to me," writes the DW.
In the opinion of Ismael Nhacucue, from the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM), the PR must provide proof of these statements because he enjoys privileged information. "The head of state, having access to privileged information, knows what he is saying. He can't simply go public with information as sensitive as this without providing proof."
The leader of New Democracy, Salomão Muchanga, also wants a serious and honest investigation to hold the terrorist recruiters accountable. "Because the owners of the situation are the same - those who have never worked for peace in the country, those who have never worked for the social well-being of the Mozambican people," he said.
For the president of the United Movement for Integral Salvation (AMUSI) party, Mário Albino, members of Frelimo itself must be investigated.
Albino argues that the party "has the power to support terrorism". For this reason, he believes that the denunciation of the head of state is for the party itself.
The President of the Republic and Frelimo "is not talking about politicians outside his party. He failed to say outright that some members of Frelimo are financing terrorism," he said.
