Oposição do Quénia rejeita planos de coligação com o partido de Ruto

Kenya's main opposition alliance has said it will not join any coalition with the group led by President William Ruto.

"The Azimio-OKA coalition will not be part of the broad-based government proposal or any other government with the Kenya Kwanza coalition," he said in a statement.

The coalition called for a "national constitutional convention, led by the people, as a possible way to resolve the national crisis, subject to the consensus and agreement of other interested parties".

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, at least 53 people have died and more than 400 have been injured since protests broke out in mid-June over the government's plan to introduce taxes on products ranging from bread to diapers.

Ruto sought to quell the protests by scrapping the proposed taxes after demonstrators stormed parliament on June 25. He also sacked almost his entire cabinet and accepted the resignation of the police commander in response to the demonstrations.

The coalition called for the arrest of the "rogue agents responsible for the shooting, maiming and killing of peaceful protesters" and the unconditional release of all "abducted Kenyans". (Source: Bloomberg. Image: DR)
