OPEC+ limits September production increase to one hundred thousand barrels per day

OPEP+ limita aumento da produção em Setembro a cem mil barris diários

The OPEC+ alliance decided on Wednesday to increase its oil supply by 100,000 barrels per day next month, a very limited increase compared to previous months.

The very limited availability" of the capacity to pump more oil in a short period of time "requires that it be used with great caution," OPEC+ stressed on Wednesday in a statement released after the monthly meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), led by Saudi Arabia and ten other allies, including Russia.

This response comes after the recent visit of the US President, Joe Biden, to Saudi Arabia and the pressure from the United States and the European Union for an increase in production to stop the rise in prices.

Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron also hosted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for a working dinner at the Elysée Palace, despite controversy over the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul and protests from human rights advocates.

The slowdown in production increases will take place starting in September, after 432,000 and 648,000 additional barrels were approved in the previous months.

After "observing the dynamic and rapidly evolving oil market fundamentals," it was decided to "adjust upwards the production level by 0.1 million barrels per day (mbd)" in the alliance's member countries, the statement said.

The ministers of the alliance countries who participated in the meeting, by videoconference, stressed "the value and importance of maintaining the consensus essential for the group's internal cohesion" and called its next meeting for September 5.
