The Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) accuses the Public Prosecutor's Office in Nampula Province of filing a complaint against the actions of the Mozambique Republic Police.
According to the CCD's Human Rights Bulletin, this is a deliberate dismissal of the complaint about the death of ten people and the wounding of 20 people as a result of the actions of PRM agents during demonstrations against fraud in the "fraudulent" local elections of October 11, 2023.
The CDD claims that it submitted the complaint to the Nampula Prosecutor's Office on March 1 and that it was forwarded to the National Criminal Investigation Service on March 19, 2024.
Since then "no procedural act has been carried out, which suggests that the complaint has been shelved, perpetuating the illegality of the actions committed by PRM agents against Mozambican citizens. Despite the competence of the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) to conduct investigations of its own accord, the investigative process remains stalled," says the institution.
According to the CDD, the complaint presents sufficient evidence of violations such as murders and bodily harm during the electoral process.
"These violations have drastically altered the daily lives of the victims and their families due to the direct action of the agents of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique," says the Non-Governmental Organization.
In all, 17 crimes were charged, including four murders by shooting and 13 crimes of aggravated bodily harm.
