European observers denounce "unjustified changes" to election results

Observadores europeus denunciam “alterações injustificadas” dos resultados eleitorais

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) issued a new statement on Tuesday (22) about the general elections that took place on October 9 and, in a clear and direct manner, says that the results were rigged in some regions of the country.

In the second communication released by the mission and to which MZNews had access, the group says that after the vote, it was "prevented from observing the tabulation processes in some districts and provinces, as well as at national level", however, it stresses that "to date, it has found irregularities during the count and unjustified changes to the election results at polling station and district level".

At a time when the results of the district tabulation announced by the electoral bodies show a victory for Frelimo and its candidates for the presidential, legislative and provincial assembly elections, a fact contested by the opposition, the EU EOM is calling for a more transparent tabulation in the phase underway at the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

"The publication of results broken down by polling station is not only a matter of good practice, but also a strong safeguard for the integrity of the results," said the Head of Mission, Laura Ballarín, quoted in the press release.

"The EU EOM considers that it is the responsibility of the electoral administration to clarify the irregularities and of the Constitutional Council to resolve them during the process of validating the results, while respecting the will of the voters," it said.

It should be noted that the results of the central tabulation of the electoral process should be released next Friday, October 25.
