Covid-19. The world sets a new daily record for infections, but deaths hold the line

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced today that 3.4 million new covid-19 infections have been reported in the last 24 hours, with some stability in the curve of deaths from the disease.

The new infections are led by the omicron variant and the total number of deaths attributed to covid-19 worldwide is 7,700, about the daily average of 7,000 that has been seen in recent days.

This wave of covid-19 does not show an alarming number of severe cases, but the WHO warns against underestimating omicron further by the burden on health systems. On the other hand, the united nations organization said that omicron will not be the last "worrisome variant" of SARS-CoV-2, but made no predictions about the greater or lesser severity of future mutations.

The surge in infections with the omicron variant is notable in all regions studied by the WHO, with almost vertical rises in the infection curves, such as in Asia, where the number of new cases increased fivefold last week.
