Nyusi says insurgency aims to "weaken Frelimo"

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi defended that the armed attacks that terrorize the province of Cabo Delgado aims to weaken the governance of Frelimo, blaming "enemies" of the ruling party for the aggression.

"Because the wave of demonstrations and other attempts to create disorder never succeeded in weakening Frelimo and the people, our enemies mounted terrorist aggression," said Filipe Nyusi, quoted by Lusa, during the opening of a seminar for social organs of Frelimo, in Maputo.

Nyusi also says that the armed attacks aim to "weaken Frelimo," justifying his position with the fact that the first rebel attack in Cabo Delgado took place on the day that the political force was closing its 11th Congress in Maputo.

"Surely it was not by chance that the terrorist actions began on October 5, exactly the day the 11th Frelimo congress ended," stressed the head of state.

It should be noted that the armed conflict in Cabo Delgado began on October 5, 2017, one day after the peace holiday celebrations, when three armed men fired at a police post in the main town of Mocímboa da Praia, in the north of Cabo Delgado province.

There are about 800,000 internally displaced people due to the conflict, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and about 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.
