Nyusi destaca cooperação internacional para resposta aos actuais desafios globais

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, considers multilateralism to be a fundamental and indispensable tool for cooperation, in order to overcome the many challenges facing humanity.

Speaking on Sunday (22) in New York, in the United States of America (USA), during the Summit of the Future, the Mozambican statesman said that multilateralism is not just an option, but an imperative necessity in order to face the complex challenges, especially on the African continent, in the area of peace and international security, which are inseparable elements.

"If we want global prosperity for humanity, Africa, with its young and hard-working population, with its rich diversity and potential, would be a total failure if it were left behind, or excluded, in the most important decision-making circles," he said during Interactive Dialogue 2, which took place under the slogan 'Strengthening Multilateralism for International Peace and Security'.

The Future Summit is an event under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly and takes place under the slogan "Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow".

In a publication by AIMNyusi pointed to terrorism, endemic diseases and climate change as complex challenges whose solution requires strong multilateral cooperation.

Nyusi pointed to the recent Covid-19 pandemic, which has claimed more than seven million lives since December 2019, with a total of 776,137,815 confirmed cases.

Covid-19 has shown how important international cooperation is in tackling global crises.

Although it was conditional, the coordinated multilateral response, according to Nyusi, was fundamental for the fight and the distribution of unforeseen resources to the most vulnerable countries.

It is also a challenge that requires multilateral involvement, the implementation of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda, which deals with the Sustainable Development Goals.

In order to respond more effectively to global challenges, the Mozambican Head of State reiterated the need to introduce far-reaching reforms in the multilateral system, especially with regard to the representation of developing countries in strategic decision-making positions, such as the United Nations Security Council.

"We reiterate our firm support for a new international financial architecture that responds to the challenges of poverty and development in the world," said Nyusi, stressing that multilateralism is a collective decision that cannot be continually postponed. For this reason, he added, "it is urgent to restore the confidence of our peoples in international institutions and international law, including".
