Mozambique should build or start building 60 more district hospitals by the end of 2024, according to an ambitious forecast by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi. Currently, 105 of the country's 154 districts have no hospitals.
He was speaking in the city of Lichinga, in Niassa province, at the inauguration of the local provincial hospital, whose upgrading and equipping works cost the state around 540 million meticais.
"With this project ['one district one hospital'] we want to speed up compliance with the universal access to health care program," he said, adding that the government is organizing funds to build more health infrastructures.
According to Filipe Nyusi, funding for the construction of at least 30 district hospitals over the next few years was secured during an international health conference held in Maputo in July.
On the other hand, the PR noted that 30% of Mozambicans still do not have the best possible access to health services, and that in rural areas the percentage is 55%.
In July, after a meeting with Filipe Nyusi in Maputo, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, welcomed the "One district, one hospital" program, recognizing that investments in health are needed in the post-pandemic. (News, Lusa)
