Niassa province intends to start producing wheat from the 2023-24 agricultural campaign, according to the secretary of state for that region in the north of the country, Lina Portugal.
To this end, the Agricultural Research Institute of Mozambique (IIAM), through the Northwest Zonal Center, based in Lichinga, is developing wheat varieties that are adapted to the province's agro-ecological zone.
"We are currently awaiting the release of the varieties by the National Directorate of Agricultural Health and Biodifference," said the press office of the Secretary of State.
To find out about the level of preparation aimed at making wheat production a reality in the province, Secretary of State Lina Portugal visited IIAM last Friday.
According to AIM, during her visit, the governor welcomed the work underway to improve the seeds of various crops, which "will boost the agricultural production process, attracting more investment to the province, especially in the agro-processing component."
"Sometimes you have to find alternatives to the crises that exist in the world. We're having this situation of a cereal crisis that particularly affects wheat and, like Niassa, we want to make a big difference in increasing production to obviously reduce the import of this cereal," said the Secretary of State.
Without giving any dates, Lina Portugal announced that the Investment Forum would be held soon and that wheat would be part of attracting investors to increase production.
