Nampula: Demonstrations force cancellation of marriage celebrations

Nampula: Manifestações forçam cancelamento de celebração de matrimónios

In Nampula province, the demonstrations taking place in the country are forcing the cancellation of an average of five wedding celebrations a week, for fear of physical attacks.

The registrar of the Civil Registry and Notary Office in Nampula, Farida Fernando, said this Monday, quoted by Rádio Moçambique, that at the moment marriages are being performed a little earlier, outside the usual time, because of violent acts

Fernando said that as a result of the violence, marriages outside the civil registry office were canceled at the request of the couple, fearing that the registrars would be attacked by the demonstrators.

The source also advised those concerned not to hold weddings during this period of demonstrations, to avoid the worst happening.

"I wouldn't advise anyone to get married right now. It's a very difficult time for all of us. We're also taking risks, we're being stoned. Last week they came to the registry office and threatened us there, but thank God nothing happened to us," she said.

Farida Fernando also reported that conservatives have been physically attacked and their vehicles vandalized by demonstrators after weddings.
