Nampula: Government owes teachers more than 68 million meticais in funeral allowances

Nampula: Governo deve mais de 68 milhões de meticais em subsídios de funeral a professores

The Nampula government continues to face pending payments of death and funeral allowances to teachers, totaling 68,009,808.94 meticais, relating to 1985 beneficiaries.

The information was made public last Wednesday (08) by the Provincial Secretary of the National Teachers' Organization (ONP), André Janna, during a meeting with the Secretary of State, Plácido Pereira.

On the occasion, the ONP Provincial Executive Secretariat once again called for the urgent settlement of the amounts. According to André Janna, despite the government's acknowledged efforts to pay the allowances, the delay has caused problems, especially for the families of deceased teachers, who often face difficulties in paying for the funeral ceremonies with dignity.

That is why the ONP representative is asking for the missing amount to be made available immediately, in order to alleviate the suffering of the bereaved families.

The trade union organization reaffirmed its commitment to continue dialoguing with the competent authorities to ensure that the financial issues are resolved soon.

Speaking about teachers' working conditions, Janna said that despite the government's best efforts, Nampula province is still one of the provinces with the most poorly built classrooms and outdoor classes.

"Of the 17,434 classrooms, 3447 are open-air, 6096 are poorly built and 7891 are conventional. As you can see, more than 55% of the classrooms do not offer good working conditions, and we need to improve the conditions of classrooms and teachers in order to improve the quality of teaching and beyond," described the source quoted in a publication on the portal. Ikweli.

For his part, the Secretary of State in Nampula province, Plácido Pereira, expressed his willingness to support the educators. "Relevant issues have been raised here, some of which are legitimate and which are the government's responsibility. Some of them, whose solution is underway, it is true that it should be at a more sustainable pace, with regard to overtime and the shift and a half, payment has already begun for the year 2023."
