Nampula lacks drugs to stop outbreak of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis

Hospitals in Nampula province have run out of drugs to contain the spread of the hemorrhagic conjunctivitis outbreak, according to complaints from patients.

According to Notícias, who visited some health facilities, patients are advised to look for the drugs in private pharmacies, where the prices don't fit many people's pockets.

In fact, there are suspicions that drugs are being diverted from public pharmacies to private pharmacies and clandestine markets, which are speculating on prices due to demand.

The complaint is refuted by the Director of the Nampula District Health Service, Manuel Eduardo, who claims that there are medicines in all the health units.

He told the newspaper that the whistleblowers had arrived at the pharmacies at a time when the shelves were empty.

Nevertheless, he urges the population to redouble hygiene measures to contain the spread of the outbreak.

Nampula province is the most affected by the outbreak of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. The Ministry of Health counts more than 4,100 cases.
