Nampula: Memba administrator denounces presence of insurgents in the district's forests

Nampula: Administrador de Memba denuncia presença de insurgentes nas matas do distrito

The district government of Memba has confirmed that the populations of the administrative posts of Lúrio and Chipene continue to live in a climate of panic following the most recent terrorist attacks, denouncing the presence of insurgents in the forests linking the district to neighboring Eráti, used as a refuge and escape route.

Speaking to the press in Nampula, Memba's district administrator, Manuel Cintura, confirmed that the situation remains unstable. Many families continue to spend the night outside their homes, fearing further attacks. "The situation remains unsettled. Part of the population is timidly returning, but many are unable to sleep in their own homes," he lamented.

The leader explained that the forests along the Lúrio and Sangaji rivers are used by the insurgents to cross between Memba and Eráti. This increases the vulnerability of the local population and hinders the actions of the defense forces.

Cintura also denounced the fact that citizens from Memba are involved in terrorism, some of them captured in districts of Cabo Delgado such as Muindumbe, Palma and Quissanga. "We have many Memba citizens involved in terrorism. This is because Memba residents have been fishing in Mocímboa da Praia for a long time," he said.

According to the administrator, when the insurgents are attacked in Cabo Delgado, they flee to Eráti, and when they face pressure in this district, they retreat to Memba territory, creating constant instability. "There are suspicions that they are hiding in our forests," he said.

Official figures quoted by Rigor NewspaperAs a result, around 50 houses were destroyed, as well as public infrastructures such as an elementary school and a church, which were completely burned down. The violence forced dozens of families to leave their homes due to a lack of security.

Despite the scenario of insecurity, there are ongoing actions to support displaced families and awareness campaigns to encourage a gradual return to their homes. The authorities guarantee that the priority is to restore security and tranquillity to the affected communities.
