Municipality of Quelimane launches post-fire solidarity campaign in the central market

Município de Quelimane lança campanha solidária pós-incêndio no mercado central

The Municipal Council of Quelimane, in Zambezia province, is considering launching a fundraising campaign soon, through the "Onda Solidária pós-Incêndio" (Post-Fire Solidarity Wave), in the local central market, to build infrastructure to standards that are resilient to natural disasters.

This was stated by the councillor for markets and fairs on the Quelimane Municipal Council, Cândido Alferes, during a visit to the rubble of the fire that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

"Regardless of the outcome of the ongoing investigation into the origin of the fire, we will soon be announcing a solidarity initiative to rebuild the largest shopping center," said Cândido Alferes, quoted by AIM.

The Quelimane municipality has one of its strategic sources of revenue in the central market.

The councillor appealed for calm in order for the city council to take a position on any subsequent actions following the disturbance.

For his part, the provincial director of industry and commerce, Abel Júnior, who was approached on the occasion, acknowledged that the partial stoppage of activities would have a negative impact on the province's socio-economic balance.

"The business community at all levels will suffer from the effects of the fire at the iconic Quelimane market. There is a need to combine efforts for the gradual return, albeit timidly, of economic transitions," he said.

The massive fire destroyed around 700 mixed stalls, leaving extensive economic damage.
