Matola residents block Maputo ring road

Munícipes da Matola bloqueiam Estrada Circular de Maputo

Residents of the city of Matola, in Maputo province, have banned vehicles on the Maputo ring road. They are demanding the construction of drainage ditches for rainwater run-off.

The population of Matola-Gare has set up barricades near the Revimo tollbooth, blocking traffic in both directions to and from the cities of Matola and Maputo.

The residents are demanding that Revimo, which manages the Maputo ring road and its four tolls, build drainage ditches for water run-off.

Interviewed by Radio MozambiqueA citizen said that due to the lack of a water drainage system, houses are flooded.

"We're not demanding much. We want ditches here in the neighborhood. This road has no ditches. When it rains, the water tends to run into the neighborhoods. We've already filed cases with Revimo, but so far we've had no answers," said one interviewee.
