Multinationals threaten "Force Majeure" in the face of millionaire losses and reduced growth forecasts

Multinacionais ameaçam “Força Maior” face às perdas milionárias e redução das previsões de crescimento

Multinational companies operating in Mozambique are considering declaring "Force Majeure" while the country experiences post-election instability, the President of the Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) said today.

"We have some multinationals that are taking steps to declare Force Majeure," he warned, stressing that the scenario could mean the loss of another 1,200 direct jobs.

Speaking at a press conference on the meeting that businesspeople had yesterday with the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, Agostinho Vuma said that the business sector had made millions in losses.

According to Vuma, the demonstrations have pushed back economic growth projections for Mozambique this year. He said that the projections indicated 5.5, but the losses of around 2.2% have pushed it back to around 3% this year.

The entrepreneurs say that they went to the meeting with the PR to ask for incisive intervention in the sector. Vuma noted that the request was substantiated by figures reflecting the sector's losses.

"We are calling for a truce, while other negotiations take place to put an end to these hostile situations for the economy and society," he said.

The President of the CTA said that there are security guarantees for companies to be able to carry out their business through safe transit at the Ressano Garcia border.
