Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) recently offered a basket of various products to people displaced in the village of Nanjua, an administrative post in Mesa, Ancuabe district in Cabo Delgado, due to terrorist attacks by Islamic groups.
MRM gave these families 1,000 sheets of zinc. The mining company also offered two thousand blankets and five thousand mosquito nets to the district government of Montepuez. The distribution of the donations will be conducted by the local authorities.
In a press release MRM states that it took to the victims four thousand solar lamps purchased by the Gemfields Foundation.
Gemfields Foundation CEO Emily Dungey hopes that this support "will be helpful to families as they face the days ahead."
The coordinator of the Infrastructure Project Management Unit for the North Region, Jaime Victor, thanked the mining company for the gesture, for covering part of his major concerns.
"This contribution is a great relief for us. In this project, we will resettle 960 families, the equivalent of about five thousand people [...] MRM's offer responds so well to our appeal," he said.
For his part, MRM CEO Prahalad Singh said he hoped that these donations would have a significant impact on people's lives.
"Everything we do in our operations must be reflected in improving the quality of life for people in the communities where we operate and beyond," he stressed.
