"Death of radical leader does not mean end of terrorism" - Filipe Nyusi

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said today that "one cannot equate" the death of Bonomade Machude Omar with the end of terrorism in Cabo Delgado, noting that the national and foreign military continue to fight.

Terrorism is not someone, it's not a person, it's not a ringleader. You can't think that if one person dies, terrorism is over," said Nyusi, referring to Bonomade's death, during a press conference in Maputo, as part of a visit by his Ghanaian counterpart.

The head of state warned that there may be other faces and forms of terrorism in northern Mozambique and that, for this reason, the fighting would continue in order to stop or at least mitigate "the evil once and for all".

"Don't equate the end of one person with the end of the terrorist novel," warned Nyusi, quoted by Lusa, adding that the "fight against terrorism will continue, not only in Mozambique, [but also] from where it came from and where it is going".

The Armed Defense Forces of Mozambique (FADM), through the General Staff, announced on Tuesday (22), in Macomia, Cabo Delgado province, the killing of the biggest leader of the terrorists, Mozambican Bonomade Machude.

Ibn Omar, considered to be the leader of the radical Islamic State group in Mozambique, was targeted by the second phase of the so-called "Golpe Duro II" operation, which is underway.

On the ground in Cabo Delgado, the Armed Defense Forces of Mozambique have been fighting terrorism, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), since July 2021.
