The former Minister of Public Works and Housing, Júlio Eduardo Zamith Carrilho, passed away yesterday morning (Sunday, 05) at his home in Maputo, according to family sources.
Júlio Carrilho was born in the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado province, in 1946, and graduated in architecture in Lisbon (Portugal) in 1971. He was Secretary of State for Public Works in the transitional government formed under the September 1974 independence agreement between Frelimo and Portugal.
Already in 1975, when he was 29 years old, Samora Machel appointed him Minister of Public Works and Housing, thus becoming the youngest member of the first independent Mozambican Government.
Between 1979 and 1980, he was Minister of Industry, before returning to public works (renamed Ministry of Construction and Water) between 1980 and 1986.
He was also president of the Board of the Fundo de Desenvolvimento Artístico e Cultural (FUNDAC) between 1989 and 1994, member of the Installing Committee of the Academy of Sciences of Mozambique from 1994 to 2008, and member of the National Commission of UNESCO between 1990 and 2000.
The man dedicated himself to the transmission of knowledge to several generations as a university professor. Júlio Carrilho raised problems in knowledge management in the country, defended the need to think about the future of Mozambique to achieve sustainable development. Before his death, he dedicated himself to teaching at Eduardo Mondlane University.
