Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei died days after being burned with gasoline by her boyfriend. Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei died on Thursday, four days after being set on fire by her boyfriend, Kenyan athlete Dickson Ndiema Marangach. She was 33 years old.

The athlete had represented the country at the Olympic Games in Paris last month and was left in a critical condition with burns on 80% of her body after her partner doused her with gasoline and set her on fire last Sunday.

Since then, Rebecca Cheptegei has been hospitalized at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, in the Kenyan county of Uasin Gishu, where she was pronounced dead late on Wednesday evening.

His companion, Dickson Ndiema, also suffered burns as a result of this episode and is currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
