Mozambique records new cholera cases 45 days later

Moçambique volta a registar novos casos de cólera 45 dias depois

The health authorities have once again reported cases of cholera, after more than 45 days without new episodes of the disease and the implementation of preventive and control measures to avoid its spread.

The disease, which weeks ago was confined to the district of Mogovolas, has now been confirmed in the district of Murrupula and the city of Nampula, and in Mopeia, in Zambezia.

According to data shared by the Ministry of Health (MISAU) on the epidemiological situation, since the outbreak of the disease in October, 466 positive cases have been reported, 120 more than the last update on December 16, when activities were paralyzed due to the vandalization of the Nametil Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC).

"Of this universe, 418 were reported in Nampula and 48 in Zambézia, with a cumulative death toll of 29, 25 of which occurred in the community," says the MISAU, quoted in a publication by the NewsHe stressed that this scenario has led the sector and partners to go on high alert and step up measures, at a time when almost the entire country is experiencing rainfall, which could worsen the deterioration of sanitation conditions in areas most at risk.

However, the health authorities also point to the implementation of prevention and control actions, including vaccination, awareness-raising about hygiene measures, sanitation and patient treatment.

It also insists on educating communities about the importance of consuming chlorine-treated water or boiling it, washing hands with soap and water or ash after using the latrine and before handling and/or eating food, an activity that has the support of local leaders, elementary multipurpose agents and activists.

The MoH urges the population to seek immediate medical attention in the event of symptoms such as acute diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration.
