The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, gives a positive assessment of the International Conference on the Management of the Miombo Forest, held on April 16 and 17 in Washington, DC, as a Letter of Intent was produced by consensus.
According to Rádio Moçambique, the Charter's main issues are the principle of permanent funding and the management of existing areas of the Miombo Forest. The document calls on the signatory countries of the Maputo Declaration on the Miombo Forest and all the key players to protect existing areas and make room for the creation of new ones.
The system adopted also highlights the importance of financing projects in the protection zones, with a particular focus on small and medium-sized enterprises geared towards biodiversity businesses.
"The conference was very open, all the countries took part, the Charter was produced by consensus and there was unconditional support from all those involved: the American government, congressmen, parliamentarians, academics, researchers and our non-governmental partners," said the President of the Republic at a press conference held yesterday, Thursday (18), which marked the end of his working visit to Washington.
