Mozambique plans to create National Peace Memorial in Gorongosa

Moçambique pretende criar Memorial Nacional da Paz em Gorongosa

Mozambique may soon create a National Peace Memorial in the district of Gorongosa, Sofala province, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, announced today.

The idea of creating a National Peace Memorial is the result of consultation between the government and the leadership of Renamo, Mozambique's largest opposition party, he said.

The monument will be a tribute to all those involved in establishing peace in the country. But also, according to Nyusi, it will be to erase the connotation of Gorongosa with wars, and allow peaceful coexistence between men and nature in that region.

According to Nyusi, this is the result of the efforts of the negotiations between the parties that led to the signing of the Maputo Accords in 2019 to put an end to long years of armed conflict between the parties.

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, was speaking at the Assembly of the Republic, in Maputo, during the presentation of his 10th and final Report on the General State of the Nation.

In June 2023, Renamo closed its base in the Gorongosa mountain range with the symbolic handing over of the last weapon.

The agreements for the disarmament and reintegration of Renamo's armed wing have already made it possible to allocate pensions to more than 3,500 former guerrillas.
