Mozambique needs to improve its quality of democracy

Moçambique precisa de melhorar a sua qualidade de democracia

The Program Director of the Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD), Dércio Alfazema, said today that the country needs to improve its quality of democracy.

Among the various challenges to the effective implementation of democracy, Mozambique is still struggling with terrorism that calls human rights into question.

The country still needs to review "how electoral processes take place, how institutions are structured to better protect civil rights in order to allow, for example, massive citizen participation in the governance process. We are now, as civil society, discussing the NGO bill," said Afazema, stressing that the situation in Cabo Delgado "puts into question humanitarian issues and the right of a citizen to establish residence.

The IMD Program Director said that these constraints negatively impact the results or conclusions when democracy evaluation studies are conducted.

Alfazema made these statements as part of today's celebration of the International Day of Democracy. But, on the other hand, he considered that there are positive aspects such as the fight against corruption that has already brought to justice figures linked to the management of the State apparatus.

In his perspective, this stance of the state in fighting corruption will contribute to Mozambique's rise in the International Ranking of Democracy.
