The country could experience shortages of basic foodstuffs and basic necessities if the demonstrations continue to disrupt the normal functioning of institutions and commerce.
The warning comes from businesspeople in Maputo province who recently held a meeting with the Governor, Manuel Tule, asking him to intervene in the matter.
"With these shutdowns and vandalizations of commercial establishments and other private properties, we could experience a stock shortage, because entrepreneurs are afraid to make imports," said the President of the Maputo Provincial Business Federation.
For Farruque Osman, the stoppages are a setback to the recovery efforts that were underway after the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition, he predicts that the strikes will accentuate the difficulties faced by entrepreneurs in meeting their wage and tax obligations. (Source: Jornal Noticias)
