Mozambique loses more than 200 million meticais due to illegal mining

Moçambique perde mais de 200 milhões de meticais devido à mineração ilegal

This year, the Mozambican state has recorded losses of more than 200 million meticais (around 3.1 million dollars) as a result of illegal mining in the central province of Zambézia, a phenomenon that continues to threaten the local and national economy.

According to information provided by the director of the Provincial Infrastructure Service, João Sembane, in an interview with Radio Mozambique, In the past, groups of prospectors have invaded areas concessioned to duly licensed companies, vandalized equipment and extracted mineral resources that are then sold on the black market.

For the source, the practice not only harms mining companies, but also considerably undermines state revenues.

Currently, 16 companies operate legally in the exploitation of mineral resources in the province. He warned that illegal mining prevents these institutions from functioning properly, weakens the business environment and makes it impossible to create formal jobs. “When the exploration process is carried out legally, companies guarantee employment, pay taxes and contribute to local development,” he said.

In fact, part of the revenue from mining activities goes directly to the communities, i.e. 2.75% is channelled to the areas where mining takes place and 7.25% is invested in infrastructure and projects of community interest.

However, he warns that illegal mining also exposes miners to life-threatening risks due to the lack of adequate safety conditions. .

In this context, the source calls on communities to abandon illegal mining, giving priority to collaboration with government institutions and duly licensed companies, in order to ensure sustainable economic and social benefits for the province.
