The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, said recently in Maputo that road accidents have led to high financial losses for the state coffers.
According to Chapo, in addition to lives, Mozambique loses around 10% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"In addition to the enormous social cost, the economic cost of road accidents is huge. With deaths and injuries in road accidents costing the country around 10% of its GDP," he said.
The Head of State was speaking last Friday in Maputo city, at the inauguration of the new headquarters of the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO).
And to minimize the impact of accidents, Chapo recalled that the transport and logistics sector had been instructed to draw up a road safety action plan in the short term.
"This plan has already been presented to the Council of Ministers. The government then approved it and it is being implemented," he said.
From January to March this year, six road accidents were recorded, resulting in 61 deaths, 22 serious injuries, 28 minor injuries and material damage.
Last year, 687 road accidents were reported, compared to 668 in 2023, corresponding to an increase of around three percent, which resulted in 825 deaths compared to 754 the previous year.
