Mozambique to be part of WHO malaria vaccination initiative

Mozambique will be part of the World Health Organization's malaria vaccination initiative until March next year.

The information was given yesterday in Maputo by the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO).

After a meeting with the Mozambican head of state, Filipe Nyusi, the director-general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom, gave a press conference in which he shared his institution's support strategies in the fight against malaria in the country.

"We discussed the inclusion of Mozambique in the Malaria Vaccine Initiative and informed them that Mozambique will be included in the first quarter of next year. This means that it will be in a few months' time," revealed the director-general of the WHO, quoted by "O País".

The WHO chief was also concerned about climate change and the outbreak of cholera and polio, which the Mozambican government has already brought under control.

"As you know, climate change is affecting the whole world and, of course, Mozambique is affected and one of the impacts, as we know, is Cyclone Freddy which brought the cholera outbreak and I am happy and have commented to His Excellency the Minister of Health and other leaders on the way they have managed the cholera outbreak," praised the WHO director-general.

Adhanom showed the WHO's openness to helping in any way it can to control other diseases.

"We have worked together on these diseases and discussed these situations which are already under control and we will continue to work together on similar diseases," he stressed.
