Malawi and Mozambique are scrambling on Wednesday to rescue survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy, as the death toll from one of the most powerful storms on record in the southern hemisphere soared above 270.
Cyclone Freddy crossed southern Africa for the second time in a month over the weekend and was still causing heavy rains on Wednesday, hampering relief efforts.
Malawi's disaster management department, quoted by Reuters, said in a statement that the death toll from the cyclone's second hit was 225, up from 190 on Tuesday, with 707 injured and 41 missing.
In neighboring Mozambique, at least 21 people had died by Tuesday, according to the disaster management agency.
The global death toll since Freddy made his first pass in February is now estimated at more than 270 in Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar.
