Mozambique and the US hold talks to circumvent USAID funding cuts

Moçambique e EUA dialogam para contornar o corte de financiamento da USAID

The Executive says it is implementing multifaceted strategies to circumvent the impacts of the cut in financial support to the country from the United States of America (USA), channeled through the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Speaking to journalists, the government spokesman and Minister for State Administration and the Civil Service, said that one of the mechanisms underway is dialogue with the American representation in Mozambique.

"But also, [the government] is mobilizing alternative sources of internal and external financing" and making internal budgetary manoeuvres "to minimize the impact of the measure," said Inocêncio Impissa today in Maputo.

Another step the executive is taking is to review and redefine priorities and optimize existing resources in order to mitigate the impact on essential services.

"We have internal resources, and because they are scarce or limited, we need to prioritize what should not be missed during the period in which the measure is in place," he said.

The exploration of emerging financing mechanisms is also a way out envisioned by the Executive to resist the American cut, while more lasting solutions are sought.
