The Mozambican government argues that the new fisheries policy being drawn up should help to boost the balance of payments, food and nutrition security, generate income for communities and protect marine fisheries resources for future generations..

According to the Secretary of State for the Sea and Fisheries at the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries (MAAP), Momade Juizo, who was speaking on Friday (23) in Maputo during the ceremony to launch regional public consultations with a view to reviewing the fisheries policy, "sustainability must be the priority because although fishing is an economic activity".

"Responsible management of resources is needed to benefit coastal communities and allow future generations to enjoy them," he added, quoted by the European Commission. Radio Mozambique.

The public consultation involves fishing communities, representatives of institutions implementing fisheries policy, representatives of the private sector catching and processing fish on land, among other related organizations.

The Maputo regional public consultation brought together participants from the three southern provinces and in the coming weeks the exercise will be replicated in the northern zone, in Nampula, and the central zone in Sofala province.
