Mozambicans choose presidents of 65 municipalities today

More than 8.7 million Mozambican voters cast their ballots today in the country's sixth municipal elections, in 65 municipalities, 12 of which are new municipalities, to elect 1,747 members..

According to data from the electoral census, 8,723,805 voters are registered for these elections, in a vote that is taking place across the country from 07:00 until 18:00, to choose 65 presidents of the Municipal Councils and those elected to the respective Municipal Assemblies.

More than 11,500 candidates from 11 political parties, three coalitions of parties and eight citizens' groups are running in these local elections, with the National Electoral Commission (CNE) having determined 1,486 Polling Station Constitution and Operation Places and 6,875 polling stations and hired 47,495 polling station staff.

The electoral process will include more than 20,311 national observers and at least 80 international observers from diplomatic missions accredited to Mozambique, as well as 866 journalists and 364 candidate delegates, according to figures updated this week by the CNE.
